Profile

When XL started, back in the heady Acid House days of 1989, we specialised in the gritty, street-orientated, D.I.Y. rave sounds that were coming from London’s suburbs. Alongside other independents like Shut Up And Dance and Suburban Bass, we helped shape a sound that was equally influenced by American urban music and European electronic sounds. Our noisy, abrasive records were shunned by all media and had a fuck you aesthetic reminiscent of punk.

This spirit is neatly encapsulated by The Prodigy's Experience LP, the work of an Essex teenager, Liam Howlett. His follow-up LP, Music For The Jilted Generation, went straight to number one, and with its more sophisticated production and arrangements, stands up as one of the definitive works of electronic music...

  • Ratatat News: Girl Talk, Weezer's Bell, Ratatat in New Malkmus Vid

<p><p><em><small>Photo by <a href="http://www.myspace.com/sdmphotos"><strong>Shannon McClean</strong></a></small></em><br /><br />The video for <strong><a href="http://www.stephenmalkmus.com/">Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks</a></strong>' "Gardenia"-- plucked from this spring's <a href="http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/49042-real-emotional-trash"><strong><em>Real Emotional Trash</em></strong></a>-- is riddled with guest appearances from some of the biggest names in indie rock, and beyond: Gregg "Girl Talk" Gillis, Weezer's Brian Bell, Mudhoney's Steve Turner, the dudes of Ratatat, Modest Mouse's Joe Plummer, Gary Jarman of the Cribs, and Portland, Oregon's mayor-elect Sam Adams.</p> <p>What isn't clear, however, is whether the video features appearances from Malkmus himself, or any of the Jicks. According to <a href="http://localcut.wweek.com/2008/08/13/a-fans-notes-vj-turned-archivist-dan-woods-tapes-men-that-make-the-whole-world-sing/"><strong><em>Willamette Week</em>'s Local Cut site</strong></a>, Malkmus turned the proceedings over to Portland-based filmmaker/archivist Dan Woods, aka VJ Dantronix. The "Gardenia" clip is his first-ever music video. But as far as being able to capture big-name folks on film, Woods is in a class all by himself. Local Cut reports that Woods has spent years scoring interviews with the likes of Kraftwerk, Belle &amp; Sebastian, Sonic Youth, and the Flaming Lips just by reaching out and contacting them. Seems simple enough, huh?<br /><br />The "Gardenia" clip, which features the aforementioned crew lip-synching and noodling on air guitars throughout the tune, premiered in Portland over the weekend, <a href="http://www.spin.com/articles/portlands-rock-elite-attend-stephen-malkmus-and-jicks-gardenia-video-premiere?page=0%2C1"><strong>according to Spin.com</strong></a>. Folks like Spoon's Britt Daniel, the Thermals, Janet Weiss of the Jicks, and Weiss' former Sleater-Kinney bandmate Carrie Brownstein were in attendance. Spin.com reports that Malkmus himself had family obligations, and could not attend.</p> <p>Spin.com reports that the "Gardenia" clip is expected to hit the internet later this week, though a <a href="http://www.vimeo.com/1456303?pg=embed&amp;sec=1456303"><strong>snippet</strong></a> is available right now, via Local Cut:<br /><br /> <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="400" height="267" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"> <embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="400" height="267" src="http://www.vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=1456303&amp;server=www.vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed> </object> <br /><br />As for Woods, he's working on a documentary collecting his interview footage. It's tentatively called <em>Music Is Everything</em> and should be completed in 2009.<br /><br />Malkmus and the Jicks will be <a href="http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/142690-malkmus-schedules-fall-tour-with-blitzen-trapper"><strong>hitting the road once again</strong></a> later this month for a spin around the UK, with a mess of North American dates to follow in the fall.<br /><br /></p><p><a href="http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/node/144785" target="_blank">read more</a></p> <p><a href="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~a/5lchmldjekuu663ucu0f3h9dpg/a"><img src="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~a/5lchmldjekuu663ucu0f3h9dpg/i" border="0" ismap="true"></img></a></p><img src="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/pitchfork/today/~4/Bwfqc97DEAo" height="1" width="1" /></p> <p><a href="http://xlrecordings.com/2008/08/19/girl-talk-weezers-bell-ratatat-in-new-malkmus-vid#comments">Comments</a></p><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/xlrecordings/~4/369404006" height="1" width="1"/>

  • Radiohead News: Hold Steady Line Up Fall Tour With Drive-By Truckers

<p><ul class="unIndentedList"> </ul> <ul class="unIndentedList"> </ul> <p>Fists will be raised. Riffs will be swapped. And damn if beers won't be sold at an unusually brisk pace, as <a href="http://www.theholdsteady.com/"><strong>the Hold Steady</strong></a> and <a href="http://www.drivebytruckers.com/"><strong>Drive-By Truckers</strong></a> link up for a monthlong North American sojourn this fall they're calling the "Rock and Roll Means Well Tour." The two bands will spend their time together switching up headlining slots-- details below.</p> <p>This isn't the first time the Hold Steady's path has crossed with the Truckers. Trucker Patterson Hood lent some vocals to <a href="http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/141879-the-hold-steady-stay-positive"><strong><em>Stay</em><em> Positive</em></strong></a> 's "Navy Sheets", and in a press release announcing the tour, Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn says, "Seeing the Drive-By Truckers on the <em>Southern Rock Opera</em> tour was instrumental to me wanting to start a band and play music again. That band is the Hold Steady. This tour brings it full circle, and it will be a pleasure and an honor to be able to share a stage with the Truckers. We're gonna have a really good time." <br /><br />Just a slightly better fit than <a href="http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/144590-the-hold-steady-to-open-for-counting-crows"><strong>the Counting Crows thing</strong></a>, ain't it?<br /><br />Despite this welcome show of intra-band unity, Hold Steady guitarist Tad Kubler got himself into a bit of hot water on the internet over the weekend following <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/news/20081708_holdsteady.shtml"><strong>an interview with BBC's 6Music</strong></a>. Speaking about Radiohead and their recent <em>In Rainbows</em> blitz, Kubler opined, "I think they've lost the plot. What are they doing? Where are they going? What's happening? I don't get it any more. They lost me. I still appreciate what they're doing, or what they're trying to do. But I think they're trying too hard not to be Radiohead. That seems a little ridiculous to me."</p> <p>He went on, "I like them as a rock band, all the buttons and sequencing and stuff like that I don't really care for. I'm a fan of rock music and what they're doing now I don't think is very good. When you have that kind of money, you can put on a great performance regardless of what you do. If you can't go out and pick up your instruments and play a good show, that doesn't do it for me. I don't have any interest in that."</p> <p>He then talked slightly less smack about Muse and praised Oasis for being "earnest" and "honest," but this being the internet, people are less inclined to care about nice things people have to say.</p> <p>Regardless of whether or not you agree with Mr. Kubler's assessment of Radiohead, you've gotta admit, <a href="http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/142559-interview-silver-jews"><strong>he's hardly the only one with a negative opinion on the matter</strong></a>.<br /><br /></p><p><a href="http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/node/144744" target="_blank">read more</a></p> <p><a href="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~a/ff9ebthnkjpq8e92b29dcku09c/a"><img src="http://feedads.googleadservices.com/~a/ff9ebthnkjpq8e92b29dcku09c/i" border="0" ismap="true"></img></a></p><img src="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/pitchfork/today/~4/iikp8QNg0go" height="1" width="1" /></p> <p><a href="http://xlrecordings.com/2008/08/18/hold-steady-line-up-fall-tour-with-drive-by-truckers#comments">Comments</a></p><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/xlrecordings/~4/368272448" height="1" width="1"/>
