BLONDE REDHEAD on tour with PANTHA DU PRINCE! 20 Jul 2010

BLONDE REDHEAD ANNOUNCE FALL TOUR
+ presale password
+ upgrade option

We are excited to announce a BLONDE REDHEAD tour in support of their upcoming album Penny Sparkle (9/14, 4AD). The tour begins in mid-October in Philadelphia, PA and will continue through to early December. The most recent extensive Blonde Redhead tour was three years ago, and their live shows are always mind-blowing. Penny Sparkle is the band’s third album for 4AD and marks another sonic twist in their already adventurous canon. It was made over the last year with the band journeying between New York and Stockholm to work with production duo Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid (Fever Ray, Massive Attack).

Opening the first half of the tour will be renowned German electronic musician and producer Pantha Du Prince. His most recent album, Black Noise, was released by Rough Trade records earlier this year to rave reviews. Pantha Du Prince fuses house, techno, shoegazy electronica and psychedelic electro-acoustic soundscapes into music that is at once both beautiful and bewitching.

There will be a pre-sale for many of the shows, and please see the link for more details. The pre-sale password is “Sparkle” and the sales will launch 48 hours prior to a given city’s general on-sale date.

We're also offering people the opportunity to upgrade their ticket(s) with a poster and CD copy of Blonde Redhead’s upcoming release for an additional $15.  They receive both the CD and poster on the album’s release date of 9/14, but will receive an instant MP3 download of the band’s new song "Here Sometimes". The upgrade option is available once the consumer reaches the shipping page.

GOTAN PROJECT - fall tour dates! 09 Jul 2010

GOTAN PROJECT LIVE!

9/29            Montreal, QUE                       Metropolis
9/30            New York, NY                        Terminal 5
10/2            Los Angeles, CA                    Club Nokia LA Live
10/3            San Francisco, CA                 Warfield Theatre

An evening with The Gotan Project is a very special night indeed. They don’t come to the US very often (the last tour was in 2006), but when they do, the shows are truly magical.  The band really pulls out all the stops when they play live, and although they never imagined themselves as a touring outfit when they first began blending programmed beats with traditional tango music back in the late '90s, they have gone on to tour the world countless times, playing over 400 concerts in support of their three studio albums. The band have played everywhere from Russia to Australia.

For the live show in support of their latest album, Tango 3.0, Gotan Project have replaced their light suits with dark pinstripes, the grand piano has changed from white to black, and the mood of the show has transformed with it. The male members of the band are all dressed in sharply tailored 3-piece suits, cut to a design that harks back to the 1930's. The three founding members of Gotan Project, Philippe Cohen-Solal, Eduardo Makaroff and Christoph H Müller are identified by the dark fedoras, which complete their outfit.

The stage itself is drenched in black, with 5 bass drums arranged across the front of the stage, the skin of each drum featuring one of the nude character letters that make up the word G O T A N from the cover of Tango 3.0. The beautiful and engrossing visuals, created by longtime collaborator Prisca Lobjoy, are projected onto a transparent chain mail screen, lending a unique texture to the images and allowing the subtle lighting behind the screen to shine through.

Whereas Philippe and Christoph previously performed from a platform at the back of the stage, they now flank either side of the stage, bringing more emphasis to the musicians who take up centre stage. Indeed, the new live show feels more reliant than ever on live instrumentation, despite the ever-present use of Gotan's trademark production, samples and DJ technique.

In fact, the Western influence that has been ever more present in Gotan's sound. “De Hombre A Hombre” is represented by Philippe, who steps out from behind his decks and effects for the first time to play the electric guitar. The bandoneon is expertly handled as ever by Facundo Torres, and the piano by Lalo Zanelli. The strings however have been replaced by the impressive Ananta Roosens who switches effortlessly between violin and brass.

Last but not least, the vocals come courtesy of Claudia Pannone, an extremely capable replacement for Cristina Vilallonga. Claudia's vocal style is loaded with a melancholy and vulnerability that perfectly complements the more sinister tone that underlies Gotan Projects latest shows. Tango 3.0 is brought to life brilliantly and vividly while the live favorites from Lunatico and La Revancha Del Tango sound just as relevant as they did when Gotan Project first began touring.

This video, for Tango 3.0's "El Mensajero" was recorded live on their current tour.

RATATAT ANNOUNCE FALL TOUR OF NORTH AMERICA 07 Jul 2010

RATATAT ANNOUNCE FALL TOUR OF NORTH AMERICA
Ticketmaster To Exclusively Offer Ticket And Album Sale Bundle
Band Currently On The Cover Of Paper Magazine’s Summer Issue!!!

Mike Stroud and Evan Mast – aka RATATAT are pleased to announce a full tour of the United States this coming Fall. It will kick off September 7 in Montreal with the first US date happening on the 9th in Royal Oak, MI. The tour concludes with two sure-to-sell-out shows at NYC’s Terminal 5 on October 8 and 9. In Los Angeles, Ratatat play Club Nokia on September 21. The band, no strangers to the road, played to over 6000 people in NYC on their last tour and other markets see equally impressive numbers. Not only do they draw crowds in the US but internationally as well – Ratatat’s last tour saw them sell-out shows in Europe, Australia, New Zealand as well as Vietnam, China and Cambodia.

Starting today, July 7, Ticketmaster, the ticket agent for portions of the tour, are including a high quality digital copy of LP4 with each ticket order (one album per order). This deal is only available in select markets (listed below) for a limited time. Following the initial promotion Ticketmaster will then offer the album for $7.00 following the purchase of a ticket. The offer is good at ticketmaster outlets only. http://www.ticketmaster.com/Ratatat-tickets/artist/918680

Ratatat’s 4th studio album, appropriately titled LP4, was recently released by XL Recordings. It was primarily recorded at Old Soul Studios, in upstate New York though the band, for the first time, also worked with a full string section at Glassworks Studios in Manhattan. LP4 features a number of spoken word interludes, one taken from Werner Herzog's 1977 film 'Stroszek' in which the lead character Bruno S describes the keyboards he owns. The other samples are all courtesy of Linda Manz, the child actress who achieved cult status on the back of her debut appearance in Terence Mallick’s 1978 classic ‘Days of Heaven’.

LP4 has received critical praise with Billboard stating “the addition of a string section and hand-drums to the group's arsenal of clashing sounds gives the new release a more exotic vibe” and Wired Magazine weighing in saying, “On LP 4 it’s clear that big licks can still be cool — as long as they’re served over scratchy samples, chest-rattling beats, and a United Nations of instruments, from Iranian drums to Japanese strings….(LP4) is an album that demands to be pumped through massive speakers.” The band are currently gracing the COVER of Paper Magazine through the end of August!!

Previous to the release of LP4, Ratatat’s sideline in hip-hop production developed from a hobby into mainstream commercial success, with two tracks featured on Kid Cudi's debut album. One of these tracks was the single 'Pursuit of Happiness', which the band performed live on Letterman with Cudi in September of 2009.

Praise for S-M 2: Abyss In B Minor out now on 4AD:
"Who knew oblivion could be so lovely."
  FILTER

"S-M#2 is lean, hungry, focussed and watertight, packing at least the same amount of ideas into half the timespan of its predecessor. In short, if we must have a shoegazing revival, let it sound like this- picking up where the best of those bands left off, realising the possibilities of melody, imagination and loud guitars allied to digital technology's distorting potential, and taking it to the next stage. Lift your eyes from your footwear, and look to the stars instead." The Quietus

"As they demonstrated with their debut, and stay true to with this release, Serena Maneesh have a sound that is very immense - it is large and dark and all-consuming. It is the sound of sorcery and post-apocalyptic worlds and #000000."

NEW Blonde Redhead ALBUM! 24 Jun 2010

Blonde Redhead return this fall with the release of Penny Sparkle, the sublime new album from the fêted New York trio.

Released on September 14th (13th outside the US), Penny Sparkle – the band’s third for 4AD - marks another sonic twist in their already adventurous canon. It was made over the last year with the band journeying between New York and Stockholm to work with production duo Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid (Fever Ray, Glasser) and as with their previous album, 23, Alan Moulder (Depeche Mode, My Bloody Valentine, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) was enlisted to mix it.

Kazu Mazino from the band speaks of the record;
“I can't say what Penny Sparkle is about just yet.
I remember talking to Ed (from 4AD) one day and telling him that I had a vision that I was traveling to far away places to complete it.
(Then) I landed in snowy slippery Stockholm..... and here.
I fell in love with the music like falling for someone you've known for a long time.
It was dreamy and sometimes was very stormy.
At times I felt like a shepherd who was trying to herd five stallions into a yard (unsuccessfully).
I felt like I was a link to everyone. I remained still and the others were constantly moving around it.
I am not sure what Penny Sparkle is but I hope I offered to them as much as they offered me.
I know that we have never made a record this way and if I could go back in time, I would do it exactly the same way again.”

Penny Sparkle will come with beautiful packaging (including a deluxe CD format) as designed by long-time collaborators, Stefanie and David from Triboro Design.

You can download or stream the album opener, “Here Sometimes”.

Have you met DYLAN LEBLANC? 23 Jun 2010

Rough Trade records is excited to introduce you to Dylan LeBlanc. Practically raised in the famed Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama, 20-year-old Dylan LeBlanc is a rare breed. Despite his age, Dylan's worn yearning voice already has the mark of aged experience. Neither the feel nor sound of the album, nor the haunted ghost summoning songs he has written, can be faked. Geoff Travis and Jeannette Lee signed Dylan and wrote his account of how he came to his attention, which is a great read and below.

Rough Trade will release Dylan’s debut album, Pauper’s Field on August 24th, and you can hear an mp3 and watch a video for “If Time Was For Wasting” now. The song has also been released as a single and is available digitally and via 7” b/w “Jack”.
mp3: http://www.beggarsgroupusa.com/mp3/DylanLeBlanc_IfTimeWasForWasting.mp3
video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lM6woecH5EA

“If Time Was For Wasting” seems to be wrenched from the heart of ever-present currents in Deep South life - where the pull of the past is unavoidable. "Admittedly I was drinking a good bit myself, and when I wrote the song I was thinking about an arrogant ignorant man and the woman he was with.  It has a lot to do with the culture around here. I pictured a man walking into a room where he lives with an angry wife.”

Dylan is a native of Shreveport, LA and now splits his time between there and Nashville. He started playing guitar at age 7, and writing songs just a few years later. The songs on this debut are beautifully nurtured, gently astonishing, stop you in your tracks reveries - gilded with strings, smokey organ lines, and keening pedal steel.

Dylan will be making his very first trip to New York in July for a very special performance with his band at Joe’s Pub on Wednesday, July 21st.

ABOUT SIGNING DYLAN LEBLANC – by Geoff Travis

Dylan LeBlanc came into my life quite by chance. A friend called Jon Tiven was visiting from Nashville. He was trying to interest me in a Souhern Rock Opera that he had written and recorded with a view to getting me to release it. It has some illustrious soul singers from yesteryear singing lead on some of the tracks. However I am pathologically averse to going back into the past, having flirted disastrously with this idea previously. The Sandie Shaw project instigated by Morrissey springs to mind, being in a hotel room with the lovely Roger McGuinn and having to tell him that the new songs he had just played me on his twelve string guitar were not actually my cup of tea, trying to convince Arthur Lee that David Roback should be producing his new record, when all he wanted to talk about was the fact that he had himself played every note on the early Love records, are just a few examples.

I was chatting to Jon and his partner Sally when they casually mentioned that they had recently seen a young man that had completely mesmerized them. They said he had a voice that fell somewhere between Ray La Montagne and Neil Young and that he was one of the best they had ever seen.

They were not his managers or his agents or his lawyers or his accountants. They just liked him as an artist. Now these two people are not just ordinary music folk. They count Steve Cropper amongst their best friends and they seem able to get Teenie Hodges, the sublime guitar player who adorns so many great Al Green records, on the phone. Something in me snapped to attention and I asked who this young man was that they were describing.  They said he was called Dylan LeBlanc and he lives in or near Shreveport in Louisiana and they had seen him play in a small club in Nashville.

Dylan is now signed to Rough Trade and his story is just beginning. But like all stories of this kind, he has been preparing for it all his life. He was signed to Fame Music which is the publishing arm that grew out of the great Muscle Shoals recording complex. Rick Hall is it's head and you can find his name on the credits of some of the greatest records to ever come out of the American South. Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin amongst them. Rick signed Dylan to Fame Music. He was signed as soon as he was legally of age to do so. Part of the deal was that Dylan got access to the studio, where he recorded his debut album.

Pauper’s Field, which was mixed by Trina Shoemaker in Nashville in March of this year will be his first release. Dylan turned 20 years of age recently and he has been performing since he was 15 years old. Playing around the Louisiana

area, often travelling by himself to play in a tiny bar hundreds of miles from home, learning his craft and trying out new songs - always writing and trying out new ideas and soaking up the rich culture of his southern homeland.

He sounds like he has lived several lives already and has the melancholy soul of a great Southern soul singer many times his age. In reality he is just a young man making his first steps into the world of music. A world he has had no choice but to participate in. It is in his blood and it is in his soul. I feel lucky to be able to help bring these songs to your attent

By summer’s end The xx will have played Coachella, Sasquatch! Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo festivals in the US. They will have also played to thousands more people as a result of their extensive touring in the US (sold-out, headlining of course). Lest 2010 close without another chance to see them, The xx is now confirmed for a North American jaunt this fall which will mark the last chance to see the band play for quite a while. The run of dates will see the band making stops on the West Coast, the Midwest, Canada, and the Northeast before its conclusion in Texas, notably performing at this year's Austin City Limits festival. The tour kicks off September 22 at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium (yes, capacity 4k) and hits NYC’s United Palace (capacity 3200) on winds up at Austin's Zilker Park for Austin City Limits on October 9. Following this The xx will head back to the UK for a much-deserved break.  Full tour dates listed below.

Previous to the fall tour, The xx are excited to announce they will perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The show will tape and air on August 4. The band will then make a quick stop in Chicago for a set at Lollapalooza (Friday, August 6) make their way to NYC for Central Park’s SummerStage just two days later (Sunday, August 8) before heading back to Europe for... more touring!

This coming Saturday, June 26, as part of the Creators Project, Milk Studios (450 West 15th Street) will host "xx: A Sculpture of the Album" by Saam Farahmand. The xx have teamed up with the acclaimed music video director Saam Farahmand for a unique audio-visual collaboration. In the piece, Saam creates a 3D physical interpretation of The xx’s debut xx. Utilizing film, light and sound via three specially created audio-visual units (each unit representing one member of the band with a mix of exclusively filmed footage and mixed sound), every visitor will have a totally unique experience of xx. This event will showcase the recorded album format in a whole new context. In an era where access to music is unlimited and often provides the background soundtrack to other experiences, this will be an opportunity to become totally immersed in the album in a whole new way. Admission is free.
