Elvis Perkins In Dearland by Elvis Perkins In Dearland

Released: Mar 10 2009

Elvis Perkins in Dearland’s new eponymous album feels very much like the second line to his exquisitely melancholic and much-hailed solo debut Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday gained Elvis a dedicated and reverent following for its nuanced meditations on death and grief—many moments on that first record felt as if the listener had tip-toed into the intimate confines of a private elegy, enveloped in that wondrous, old-soul quality of Elvis’s voice.

There are still plenty of private moments on Elvis Perkins in Dearland, but Elvis is now joined by a talented trio of friends that toured with him in support of Ash Wednesday.  Along with Elvis on guitar and lead vocals, Elvis Perkins in Dearland is Brigham Brough (upright bass, saxophone, vocals), Wyndham Boylan-Garnett (pump organ, guitar, harmonium, trombone, vocals), and Nick Kinsey (drums, percussion, banjo, clarinet, vocals).  Many of the new songs on Elvis Perkins in Dearland were honed on the road by the four bandmates, whose natural ease with one another allowed them to constantly experiment with arrangements on the fly.

Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Chris Shaw (Public Enemy, Bob Dylan, Ween) and Elvis Perkins In Dearland, the album was recorded in Upstate New York in the latter part of 2008.  Shaw recorded and mixed the album as well.

“On this new record we wanted to capture the spirit of our performances,” drummer Nick Kinsey said.  “The challenge was to get down that spontaneity.” Perkins says, “This album is faster and younger than Ash Wednesday.  Being in a studio with three other creatives instead of just one was a new thing for me.  It takes four times as long to decide everything… but in the end, this kind of interplay made for much good.”

you can't go wrong with these boys -

From the songs i have heard on this record that were developed along their tour, this album will be nothing short of great. Can't wait to see them again.

Another winner from Elvis -

Like sophisticated honey pouring from a twangy rustic bowl that's how this new winner from EP in D goes down. I've been eagerly listening to the free stream supplied with my pre-order but what I really want is the genuine CD to blast from my car windows and my living room windows. Sweet stuff the guys have whipped up.

A big fan here in Montreal, Canada.

Elvis Perkins In Dearland -

What a fantastic treat for the ears!!

I have just finished listening to this album at work. I found myself tapping my toes to certain songs that were very musically full, and during other songs, I found myself dreaming of days gone by, and days to come - both happy and sad.

Elvis - you have brought another wonderful musical gift to those of us who have followed you along your lyrical and musical journey...well done!

I love the fullness of the band on this album. The style is unique and the musicality is second to none!

Perkins is the REAL Elvis! -

I found out about Mr. Perkins through a series of links on other artists websites a few years ago - Ben Kweller led me to someone, who led me to someone, who led me faithfully to Elvis, the REAL Elvis (Not to take anything from Presley).

I was hooked on the few songs I heard online and subsequently went out immediately to purchase Ash Wednesday. The album was haunting, beautiful, sad yet hopeful. An album I consider to be one of the ten greatest first albums ever recorded.

So, I was very much anticipating Elvis' second release, but, at the same time I was over joyed that he was taking his time to craft something worthwhile, instead of falling into the "get music out there every year" trap that many musicians succumb to.

Now, that music has arrived in the form of ELVIS PERKINS IN DEARLAND. I pre-ordered the CD early in February, because I simply could not wait another month to hear what had been recorded, and let me tell you this, my HIGH expectations have been exceeded.

I wanted to let the album resonate for a week or so before reviewing it, so, I listened to it about 6 or 8 times throughout the weeks, at different audio levels, in different moods and as I expected it was a magnificent delight.

The album is rich and layered just like ASH, but it's different, but not too different. Perkins moved forward with his style and writing, but kept the songs rooted in the personal, and although the tunes are a little upbeat than those on ASH, the melancholy is there, Elvis writes songs as if he's lived 3 lifetimes in his short lifespan.

The band that has been assembled fits him well, and lends a new sweetness to Perkins style and tone. This is a near perfect album (the only misstep being I'LL BE ARRIVING vocals over production), and has excited me yet again for the next album!

9/10

DOOMSDAY is one of the finest songs I have ever heard, simply beautiful.
