tUnE-yArDs confirms November US Tour Dates with Dirty Projectors!!! 28 Sep 2009

tUnE-yArDs aka Merrill Garbus has been a busy bee, touring non-stop in support of her "DIY masterpiece" (Performer Magazine) BiRd-BrAiNs. To date she has played with notable acts such as Beirut, Micachu and The Shapes, and Max Tundra to name a few. Most recently she made quite a splash during a recent string of European dates with Dirty Projectors:
"Mixing West African rhythms and vocal styles, old fashioned blues, the occasional hip hop beat and a soulful voice worthy of Al Green doing a Nina Simone impression, Tune-Yards' music should be a mess. Except it isn't. The range of genres are exploited perfectly, and her intricate ukulele playing prove that she's mastered more than a loop pedal. Whooping and hollering and throwing her hands in the air like a disco infused banshee, she faces the crowd unafraid. It takes bravery to be this different, and talent to pull it off so proficiently." Londonist
Now she is poised to hit the road for a slew of dates starting in early October on the East Coast, followed by some dates in the Midwest supporting Sunset Rubdown that will take her to the West Coast later in the month.
...and that's not all. It seems her Euro dates with Dirty Projectors went so well, the two acts now plan to join forces for a spell in early November for a run of US Tour dates!

4AD recently put out a limited edition screen-printed cd release of BiRd-BrAiNs this past August. BiRd-BrAiNs will be given a full cd release, including 2 new bonus tracks on November 17th.
BiRd-BrAiNs was recorded over 2 and a half years on a hand-held voice recorder. Sampling snippets of her life as a nanny on Martha’s Vineyard and later as a young musician in noisy urban settings, Merrill weaved sounds together to make substantial rhythms and then layered her ukulele and vocals on top.

tUnE-yArDs is an incredibly talented and compelling performer. Whether she's playing solo or with a full band, her incredibly powerful voice and dextrous way of working with loops made on the spot is truly something to behold.

Praise for tUnE-yArDs and BiRd-BrAiNs
"At times, she's a self-contained Sublime Frequencies compilation, jumping between blues, African tunes, shiny reggae-esque sprawls, and lo-fi folk." Stereogum "Band To Watch"
"Over a jazzy drum loop and intermittent bass, tUnE-YaRds' Merrill Garbus sings a lilting chorus worthy of the song's title." Pitchfork "Best New Music" track review of "Sunlight" {8.0}
"...a DIY masterpiece... an eclectic patchwork quilt of vocals, ukulele, field recordings and beats created from kitchen utensils." Performer Magazine
"Using what sounds like a ukulele, multi-tracked vocals, percussion loops pieced together from typewriters and other household gadgets, and samples from field recordings, Garbus (who has a background in puppetry) has created a strange poppy post-modern album of sound collage and sing-alongs — as if Brazilian visionary Tom Ze was collaborating with the Andrews Sisters and the Raincoats." Hartford Advocate "CD Of The Week"
